Driving Standards Agency
Scenario
Charteris helped this UK government agency define an approach to the authentication of online business users.
Situation
The DSA needed to address the issue of online authentication, because it wished to extend its online test booking capability to include booking by business users on behalf of drivers.
Charteris Role
Charteris provided a specialist security consultant to work with the DSA to design an appropriate technical solution to the problem, and define the infrastructure and resources required for implementation.
Solution
Charteris drew on its experience and understanding of the Government Gateway, past of the infrastructure for e-gvernment developed by the Office of the e-Envoy, and designed an authentication architecture which would allow the DSA to make use of this Government Gateway as the core infrastructure for the solution.
Charteris also conducted a review of existing authentication arrangements used by DSA call centres and Internet services. We then developed the authentication architecture to support the DSA's planned future services, integrating the authentication processes for the call centres and multiple Internet services, and ensuring that effective security is not at the expense of service usability.
Stuart Leeke, Manager of the Internet Test Booking project at the DSA, said "We first talked to Charteris because of their association with the Government Gateway. We were pleased to find that, in addition to bringing this specialist experience, they were able to understand our business needs quickly and to define a practical way forward which meets our needs as a self-funding agency".
