Global Construction Firm
Scenario
Major enhancement of core project tracking system.
Situation
The client had an existing system written in Visual Basic
3 which allowed construction project managers to keep
track of the commercial side of their worldwide developments.
Millennium compliance was in doubt, both for the application
and the operating platform. In addition, the system it
had been developed almost to the limits of Visual Basic
3 and would have been very difficult to add further functionality.
Charteris Role
The consultants were asked to undertake a thorough review
of the system and to make recommendations for action.
Solution
The application was redeveloped using a 3 tier architecture
in Visual Basic 6. Initially, the existing functionality
was duplicated, but extensive additional functionality
was added to support the current and anticipated needs
of the business, including a much improved user interface.
The application was built in Visual Basic 6, using MTS
on the middle tier with SQL Server 6.5 as the database.
A second development phase added further required business
functionality.
The software and technologies used were Microsoft Tool Set,
MS Visual Basic 6.0, SQL Server 6.5, MS Transaction Server
2.0, ADO, MS Windows NT4, Visual SourceSafe
Four developers were initially committed during the project,
and Charteris was later asked to provide additional developers
as the project expanded. The project was completed as
planned, and resulted in a much more effective project
management tool that was also Millennium complaint.
